No. 3 Wayne State's Ashley Arlen scored all 19 of her points in the second half to lift the Wildcats to a 59-56 victory over No. 23 Augustana Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball.
It's the 42nd-straight win at home for WSC and the Wildcats improve to 24-2 (18-2 NSIC). Augustana snaps its three-game win streak and drops to 19-5 (16-4 NSIC).
Alex Feeney notched a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds to record her seventh double-double of the season.
Molly Hayes handed out a game-high six assists.
Both teams shot about equal from the floor with the Vikings at 35.7 percent (20 of 56) compared to the Wildcats' 38.9 percent (21 of 54).
Augustana opened the game with a 4-0 lead and extended it to 10-2 after a 3-pointer by Feeney at 14:59.
WSC took its first lead of the game at 7:29 after a 12-6 run gave the Wildcats a 16-14 advantage.
Emily Schulte drilled a shot from behind the arc at 2:48 to knot the score 20-20.
Augustana took back its lead at with 1:33 left in the half after Feeney used a layup and a free-throw to allow the Vikings to go ahead 23-22.
WSC's basket with one second on the clock cut the Wildcats' deficit to 25-24 at half time.
Augustana committed 10 turnovers in the half, compared to WSC's five.
The Vikings hit four 3-pointers (57.1 percent) and shot 32.0 percent from the field (8-25) in the first 20 minutes. The Wildcats were 28.1 percent (9-32) from the floor.
Leads continued to swap in the opening six minutes and 11 seconds of the second half until Schulte nailed a key 3-pointer that gave Augustana a 37-36 lead. The Vikings then scored the next six points to take a 43-36 advantage at the 11 minute, 43 second mark.
The Wildcats used a 13-2 run to come back and take a 49-45 lead at 6:29.
Schulte's two free throws tied the score 49-49 and Shaunteva Ashley knotted the score again 51-51 with 1:41 remaining, scoring just the third field goal for the Vikings over a nine minute time span.
WSC outscored Augustana 7-5 in the time remaining to keep its win streak alive.
Schulte was also in double-digit scoring for Augustana with 14 points and Andrea Whiney had two of the Vikings' four blocks.
Men's Recap
Wayne State extended a three-point lead with four minutes left to double figures en route to a 71-61 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball win Saturday night.
WSC improves to 8-16 (7-13 NSIC). Augustana falls to 15-9 (12-8 NSIC).
Amry Shelby scored 24 points to lead his Wildcats, who shot 57.1 percent (12 of 21) in the second half.
Cody Schilling's 20 points paced Augustana. He was the lone Viking to reach double figures. Derrick De Zeeuw grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
Augustana held as large as five-point lead in the second half, but WSC erased the difference and had a double-figure advantage with two minutes to play.
Both teams shot worse than 40 percent in the first 20 minutes, and the Wildcats led for most of the first half. It wasn't until Drae Murray drilled a 3-pointer with five seconds left before intermission that WSC didn't have a lead. Murray's trey tied the contest at 27-27 at the break.
Murray scored seven first-half points for the Vikings, while Shelby had eight for the Wildcats.
Augustana put together a 9-2 run early the second half to build a 34-29 advantage three minutes in.
Three minutes later, the Wildcats used an Ayron Worthington layup to take a 38-36 lead.
Schilling connected on a pair of free throws at the eight-minute mark to put the Viking ahead 44-43, but that would the last time the visitors would lead.
WSC scored six unanswered points in response. The Wildcats' lead eventually maxed out at 12 points with 12 seconds left.
Eight WSC free throws in the final minute of play kept the Vikings from lingering.
The win for the Wildcats evened the season series as Augustana beat WSC earlier this season in Sioux Falls.
Schilling's 20-point outing moved him into second on the all-time scoring list at Augustana, passing Mark Smed. He now has 1,796 career points.
