If House Bill 1206 passes, it would take more than $800,000 left in the tax rebate fund and give it to Feeding South Dakota... ultimately serving up to 450 organizations. That $800,000 would be spread out over four years.
"For every dollar we could potentially receive, we could turn that into 6 pounds of food," Gassen said.
Six pounds of food at $200,000 dollars a year comes out to more than a million pounds of food each year.
"It's a lot of money and a lot of food. And it takes a lot of food to fight the fight against hunger in South Dakota," Gassen said.
This bill was written by Representative Susy Blake with a passion to feed those who need it most.
"We know we have the need, there are people struggling with food. This money was set aside with food for those who need it most. We have that need, we have the funds, this is the method by which we could help people all across the state," Blake said.
As this bill goes through it's final steps in the capitol, Gassen plans to testify on its behalf.
"My testimony is sharing who we are, what we do and how we can make the dollar go a long way," Matt Gassen said.
