If you would rather do Zumba than run on a treadmill, but can't do high impact exercise because of painful joints the Avera McKennan Fitness Center has the class for you. Nancy Naeve Brown watched a Zumba Gold class shake it.
Kathy Kemp has put an emphasis on exercise her entire life. As she has aged she hasn't let that fervor for fitness fade although her weekly workouts have changed a little to accommodate the changes in her body.
"I really enjoy physical activity and I rally need it for my mental health as much as my physical conditioning, " Kathy said.
Zumba Gold at the Avera McKennan Fitness Center is a perfect fit for her led by fitness instructor Karri Stearns.
"Zumba Gold is completely different than traditional Zumba. Zumba Gold caters to active older person or those with special needs like hip issues, back issues, ankle issues because it illuminates impact and pivoting and swiveling that you have in Zumba, "Stearns said.
The best part about this type of dance infused cardio workout it doesn't feel like you are working out.
"It's just fun first of all. And it was a chance to learn Zumba and not jump into an already existing class. In Zumba Gold we are all learning routines together. It's a little lower impact and Karri does a good job of making it appropriate for the bodies that are in the class, "Kathy said.
Stearns also stresses how important it is to stay active no matter what your age.
"Because there are so many of our physical aspects that go down the drain so to speak as we get older. Flexibility goes, our joints aren't so strong, and our bones aren't so strong. If they can get into Zumba Gold we work on balance, work on weight bearing activity, we work cardio, strength training which tends to diminish as we get older," Stearns said.
The Zumba Gold class is definitely popular and unique. The Avera McKennan Fitness Center is the only gym in Sioux Falls to offer it and now that it's here, you will most likely find Kathy Kemp here getting her "Latin on" while keeping the pounds off.
Zumba Gold classes are Wednesday and Friday mornings at 10:45 at the Avera McKennan Fitness Center. T
