Posted: Updated:

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - Two grassland fires started by lightning have been completely contained in southwestern South Dakota.

The Hay Canyon and Wick fires started separately but merged into one blaze southeast of Hot Springs.

Fire Information Officer Beth Hermanson says the fires were 100 percent contained Thursday.

The two fires burned about 17,667 acres, or more than 27 square miles.
