In their quest to be the best, Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton earned yet another Top Performing Hospitals Award in the National QUEST Collaborative. Nancy Naeve Brown explains why being a QUEST member is important and why they made the list as tops in the nation for the 3rd year in a row.
Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton is once again among the Top Performing Hospitals in the Premier Healthcare Alliance's National QUEST Collaborative. QUEST stands for Quality, Efficiency, Safety and Transparency. President and CEO Pam Rezac says being a part of QUEST helps her staff perform high quality health care.
"We volunteer to participate because we would like to compare our data and learn about best practices and compare with others in improving our performance." Avera Sacred Heart President and CEO Pam Rezac said.
Avera Sacred Heart was among 278 hospitals nationwide to participate in the QUEST initiative and of those, Yankton ranked in the top 10%. The areas they focused on were heart attack, congestive heart failure, pneumonia and joint replacement.
"We are a top performing hospital for evidence based care. What that means is we provide the correct care for the correct patient every time. So if you come in to our hospital with pneumonia we'll insure you have blood cultures drawn, antibiotics in a short period of time so that we start treating pneumonia right way," Theresa Guenther, Director of Quality Improvement at Avera Sacred Heart said.
"The patient should be able to feel confident that when they come to Avera Sacred Heart we are providing care that is best practices, evidence based and they should feel real comfortable that there are not variations in the care they receive, that it's consistent with the highest quality in the nation," Rezac said.
Patients who ended up in one of the hospital beds at Avera Sacred Heart also said they were happy.
"We got a HealthGrade award for patient satisfaction," Rezac said.
"Patients that took the HealthGrades survey said we are one of the top performing hospitals in the nation for their perception of care. How we care for them, not clinically, but through their eyes. It came back they were very satisfied. "Guenther said.
They also got an A+ rating from employees on their satisfaction.
"We are doing the right thing, "Rezac said.
