After taking home four state titles in last years state meet, it seemed as if Kari Heck had performed as well as an athlete could in a single season. This year she continues to succeed, making record breaking routine.
"It's really nice to break the records," Heck said. "Like breaking the 19-foot outdoors and breaking 20-feet in the same season was really exciting. I know I put a lot of hard work in so its great that it's finally paying off."
In four years on the Warriors varsity squad she has seen a lot of improvement.
"I started out freshman year not even making finals," Heck said. "I kind of worked my way up. Just learned to take things one step at a time. It's a lot of hours that I put in after school and balancing class work and working out. Just a lot of dedication and you have to be committed to the sport."
The track star's competitive nature keeps her in the game.
"I love competing," Heck said. "You stick a big jump out there, run a really fast time. It makes you feel great inside."
Next fall, Heck is taking her talents to Lincoln. Moving on to the next step in her career as a member of Nebraska's track and field team.
"I'm very excited to get down to Nebraska," Heck said. "I'm ready to take that next step in my track career and really start competing at the college level against others who really love the sport of track and field."
Before that, she has one last state meet to think about.
"I just really want to defend my four state titles," Heck said. "I hope to improve my times and hopefully another record jump."
