Viborg experiences water shortage, restriction

Posted: Updated:

People in Viborg, SD, are being especially mindful of their water usage Tuesday. In fact, they're under a water restriction.

Earlier, Tuesday, Viborg was dangerously close to running out of water.

According to city leaders, the 800 people living there used twice the average amount of water in a 24-hour period.

The word has certainly spread throughout the day, as it was something nobody saw coming.

"We've been here 22 years and we've had a lot of hot summers and I don't ever remember just about running out of water," Tammy Fey said.

Tammy Fey runs her own daycare. With 10 kids coming over each day, she knows she might have to do something different.

"We flush a lot of toilets and wash a lot of hands," Fey said. "We probably need to stock up on some more baby wipes," she said.

Down the street, a few kids find other ways to cool off knowing their showers might have to be a little shorter.

"We probably wash two loads of clothes every night. Everyone has a bath and shower so it is very important to us," Jenny Hanson said.

"Definitely try to shower less, it's summertime, we have 4 kids. Not water lawns, washing cars, try and be a little more conservative," Alicia Wilson said.

"It took me off guard thinking our little town went through that much water in that amount of time but I guess we did," Fey said.

People say the shortage is one of those things that makes you think about conserving water more often down the road.

"I don't think we realize how important until something like this happens. You take it for granted," she said.

The water restriction in Viborg will last through Wednesday.
