Step Forward to Prevent Suicide

Posted: Updated:

The Helpline Center will be holding its Step Forward to Prevent Suicide event on Saturday June 23rd at Falls Park. The event starts at 9:00 Saturday morning. There will be a 1.5 mile walk and a 5K run. There isn't a fee to participate but donations are encouraged. You can register at

The day will conclude with a remembrance ceremony at 10:30 am for those who have lost a loved one to suicide. The remembrance ceremony will include a message of hope by Pastor Heidi Binstock and a balloon release.

For over 30 years, the Helpline Center has been South Dakota's leader for suicide prevention and aftercare services. By stepping forward, your participation will support the Helpline Center's suicide prevention and aftercare services while saving lives.

Sadly, event organizers say suicide is currently the second leading cause of death among teens and young adults in South Dakota, and in 2011 the number of suicides in the Sioux Falls area was at its highest level in 10 years.

Event organizers say on average, one person in the US attempts suicide every 60 seconds. Organizers say this event will raise awareness about suicide in South Dakota. They say awareness encourages those who are struggling to reach for help, and it encourages communities to learn more about the warning signs of suicide.

Proceeds from the event will stay 100 percent local, supporting the Helpline Center's suicide and crisis services including a statewide suicide prevention hotline, support services for people who have lost loved ones to suicide, a suicide crisis texting program for teens and suicide prevention training.

A Step Forward to Prevent Suicide event is also being planned in Pierre for September 8. Communities interested in hosting a Step Forward event in partnership with the Helpline Center should call the Helpline Center.
