Sioux Falls Police say it was an unusual occurrence...an early morning bank robbery: a bank targeted before it was even open. Late Monday night, police arrested the man they believe is responsible.
Sioux Falls Police made the announcement they had arrested 21-year-old Alvione Jones of Sioux Falls in connection with the bank robbery at the Great Western Bank in the 200 block of North Sycamore Avenue, near Sycamore and 6th street. That robbery happened at 7:30 Monday morning..
Police say surveillance camera images show Alvione Jones as he committed the crime.
The bank is located near a residential area, and although any bank robbery catches it's victims by surprise....what happened Monday morning seemed even more invasive.
It is a rarity in Sioux Falls, seeing officers spread throughout a neighborhood, establishing a perimeter with guns openly drawn. This was the reaction to the news that a man with a gun intercepted a bank employee on their way into work to open the bank for the day. Officer Sam Clemens is a spokesman for the Sioux Falls Police Department. "A black male approached the employee, displayed a handgun and then went inside demanding cash. Ended up leaving with an undetermined amount of cash at this point in time and fled."
Initially, police told us they didn't know if the gunman fled on foot or in a car, but a 10-year-old Sioux Falls girl says she thinks she saw the bank robber make his getaway. "We were at daycare, I was getting ready to eat and a man started dashing that way." Molly Duffy was at a near-by daycare center when she noticed a man running from the bank, past her daycare and then disappeared.
Soon after the robbery, police were searching areas in and near the bank, trying to find the gunman and wondering if he was hiding somewhere or if he was long gone. "They did bring in some dogs to try to track the person."
In the meantime, news quickly spread throughout this area that the local Great Western Bank had been robbed and people were taking their own precautions, including Molly Duffy's daycare center...which went into lockdown...something Molly never really knew about until today. "Actually none of us actually knew that we were in lockdown. Only one person knew."
Again to bring you up to speed, 21-year-old Alvione Jones of Sioux Falls has been arrested in connection with the robbery at Great Western Bank. The arrest was a joint investigation between Sioux Falls Police and the FBI. Jones is facing a charge of first degree robbery.
