Two men arrested after assault on Sioux Falls police officer
Two men were arrested after an assault on a Sioux Falls police officer Monday night following a report of a noise disturbance.
Walter Coleman, 28, and Gregory Bass, 19, are behind bars following a noise disturbance report shortly after 9 p.m. Monday. They are expected to appear in court Tuesday.
Two Sioux Falls police officers responded to the call in the 1800-block of South Euclid Avenue. Police initially talked to a man outside about the noise disturbance and police said there were no problems.
However, just as the officers were about to leave, Walter Coleman came out of the house, ran up to the officers and started yelling and screaming profanities. Police said Coleman was yelling so loud 12 to 15 people inside the house came outside.
Police said they tried to arrest Coleman but he pulled away and made fist punching motions at them. Police tried spraying Coleman with pepper spray but they said it had no effect.
Police said when they tried arresting Coleman a second time he ran into the backyard. They chased Coleman through the backyard and said at one point Coleman turned around and hit one of the officers in the face.
Police said Coleman ran inside the house and into the kitchen and tried instigating other people at the party to join the situation but no one helped him.
Coleman was finally apprehended however when officers were ready to leave for a second time Gregory Bass came out of the house yelling and cursing. Police said they told him he was going to be put under arrest. Bass tried pulling away but this time police were able to apprehend him on the first try.
Walter Coleman was charged with Simple Assault on Law Enforcement Officer which is a felony, Disturbing the Peace, Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest and Obstructing Law Enforcement.
Gregory Bass is charged Disturbing the Peace and Resisting Arrest.
Both Coleman and Bass are expected to make a court appearance Tuesday afternoon. Stay with KSFY News as more details unfold.
