Gov. Daugaard dismayed by health care court ruling

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard says he is dismayed by the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling upholding the federal health care law, but he will work to protect the state from what he sees as the law's harmful effects.

The high court on Thursday upheld most of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, including the requirement that nearly all people have health insurance.

Daugaard says he will study all options to find ways to minimize what he sees as the damage the law could do to South Dakota's health care and insurance industries.

Daugaard has said the state will wait until after the November election to set up a health insurance exchange, which would help people shop for insurance, in the hope a Republican president and Congress would repeal the law.
