Thursday was also a big day for Brookings' business community.
Indeed, there was a groundbreaking for a new $100 million dollar cheese production facility that is set to create 200 new jobs two years from now.
There is a lot of pride in Brookings these days and it all centers around this plot of land on the city's east side and what it will become two years from now; a new cheese production facility for Bel Brands. Lance Chambers is the company's president. "We did a national search on where's the best location and Brookings rose to the top. There's a great workforce here, very pro business environment."
Three things worked in Brookings favor: the city's close proximity to I-29. The presence of a large dairy research facility at South Dakota State and recruitment efforts by Governor Dennis Daugaard's team of state economists, who are always looking for ways to convince existing businesses to expand into South Dakota. Governor Daugaard says although this project is just getting started, it may only be the beginning for Bel Brands in South Dakota. "If demand continues to grow as it has in the last several years, then they're looking at another phase....phase two...which will essentially double their capacity again."
