Crews make big progress on Dakota Fire

Posted: Updated:

The Dakota Fire burning 15 miles from Rapid City at Lake Sheridan is 60% contained Thursday night.

The fire has charred 328 acres of rugged terrain and remains at 60% contained.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation.  There are over 200 personnel fighting the fire.

The Northern Rockies Type II Incident Management Team took over the Dakota Fire Thursday morning at 7:00.

The firefighters are attempting to remove unburned fuel between the main fire and containment lines established Wednesday.

Fire managers continue to work with interagency cooperators from the local area and that cooperation has been critical.

North Sheridan Lake Road is closed from Spring Creek Picnic Ground to Sheridan Lake North Boat Launch.  The South Boat Launch is closed, however, the South Sheridan Lake Campground is still open for public use.

No evacuation orders are in place.
