Donna Lee Bartholow lives for art. The 70-year-old used to teach her craft to young and old alike.
"I loved to tell them and encourage them to say, 'what if, what if I did this or did that?' That would stimulate their little creative minds," said Donna Lee.
She even convinced her husband, Thomas, to try art when his health problems, four attacks and a bout with cancer, kept him cooped up at home.
"Donna Lee said one day, 'I picked up a throwaway camera last time I was in town. Why don't you take the camera and go out and shoot some things?' I took the hint," said Thomas.
With light and laughter, this couple's passion for art has made their own bond that much stronger. Now it's Donna Lee's health that is failing. She's lost 80 percent of her lung function. But, art and the city of Brookings' have kept the Bartholow's going even on their lowest days.
"We love it here," said Donna Lee. "We love the people, and it's a very art-minded community for South Dakota."
