In this humidity you would never sit it your car with the windows up and the ac off, yet a lot of people are putting their dogs in that predicament.
Humane officers with the Sioux Falls Humane Society say it's been a bad week for dogs. Officer Andy Oestreich said the emergency vet clinics have seen more dogs come in because they're dehydrated and suffering from heat exhaustion.
"People for some reason want to bring their dogs with them. Yesterday we pulled a dog out of a car and the temp inside the car was over 109 degrees. The dog was only in there for 15 minutes but we had to cool the dog down."
When it comes to exercising your dogs in this type of weather, Officer Ostreich says consider the toll the heat takes on you, then think about running while wearing a fur coat. It's better to take 2 shorter walks; one in the morning and one in the evening, than to try and do one long one in the heat of the day.
