Numbers rise in ER departments during 4th of July week

Posted: Updated:

For Emergency Rooms across the nation, the heat coupled with the 4th of July make things a whole lot busier. We asked one Sioux Falls ER what they notice this time of year.

Between the 4th of July and the extreme heat, the ER at Sanford Health is gearing up for what, staff expects, to be a busy week.

From injury accidents, to fireworks, heat, alcohol and bad decisions - they say - it's the perfect recipe for possibly life threatening situations.

Dr. Chris Carlisle says all it takes are good decisions to keep away from trouble. But, every year, for many, that's not the case.

"It seems to me like the 4th of July is one of those shifts you've got to be prepared for and ready to be on your feet the whole time. You won't be able to sit down and relax long," Dr. Chris Carlisle said.

The injuries that come into the ER are all different, he says, but there are some good reminders to keep safe, this week.

Keeping hydrated with plenty of water to avoid heat injury.

Use good judgement, especially with bottle rockets.

Wear a helmet or a seatbelt whenever you hit the road.

Don't drink and drive.
