Beating the heat at the Mayor's Fourth of July picnic

Posted: Updated:

The Mayor's Fourth of July Picnic has become a tradition for many families in and around Sioux Falls. But this year the party happened to fall on quite possibly the hottest day of the summer. Forcing many people to take some extra steps to stay cool.

In case you haven't noticed, or stepped outside, the summer swelter is upon us. Making for quite the experience at the mayor's picnic.

"It's definitely hot! It's nice that there's a breeze, we plan to be out for a little bit enjoying the music then we'll be inside the rest of the day." Said Becca Conner.

While others are taking the chance to soak up a few rays.

"Well the heat? I have hardly noticed it. It's just wonderful to be here the mayor throws a wonderful picnic and I always feel patriotic when I come to it." Said MaryAnn Egan.

The majority of picnickers quickly found the closest available shade. Others brought their own or developed creative ways to beat the heat.

"I've got my sunscreen here, I've got my spray bottle I've been getting myself wet every once in a while, I'm sweating a bit too but I'm keeping cool." Said Bryan Conner.

The city is also taking safety seriously, police, fire, and EMT's keeping an eye on people. Shortly after noon the phone said it was already 93 degrees, but that didn't seem to be keeping the crowds away from falls park.

"We could care less, we got our South Dakota wind and guess what where there's wind there's no bugs! We love it!" Said Mayor Mike Huether.

While the temperature may have felt over the century mark, plenty of people aren't taking this sunshine for granted.

"It very well could have stormed, I know we need rain but it's nice we don't have rain on such a nice day." Said Conner.

Rain is definitely not on the forecast and the day's temperatures are only going one way, up. But not everyone is sweating it.

"Oh I don't think I'll even notice it I'm having too much fun." Said Egan.
