South Dakotans think Jaycees fireworks display "too short"
Not many people were too happy about this year's fireworks display at the W.H. Lyons Fairgrounds in Sioux Falls.
We had a number of Facebook comments about the fireworks. Chad says, "the display seemed to be about half as long as previous years." Dawn says, "it was very short! Hard times, I guess."
We talked to the Sioux Falls Jaycees to see if the display was in fact, shorter than past years.
"It was a nice display. It was a little short," Leif Hanson said.
"I thought this year would be another 20 or 30 minutes but it kind of lasted eight minutes, I believe," Shasoe Hanson said.
Others thought the timing was just right.
"It was quality so you know what, you don't need quantity," Karen Delong said.
And Karen thinks we should appreciate the show even went on.
"We were probably privileged to have any at all with all the communities that didn't get to have any fireworks. We'll take what we can get and enjoy it," Karen Delong said.
The Sioux Falls Jaycees didn't know if they were going to have a fireworks display this year because they were short on money. The Grand Falls Casino in Larchwood, Iowa stepped in to help. More than enough money was raised.
We talked to a Jaycees spokesperson who says the show lasted about 20 minutes. She says they paid $15,000 -- the same as last year to get the more than 60 boxes of fireworks. She says more shorter fireworks were ordered which is maybe why people thought it was a shorter show.
But some hope the show improves for 2013.
"The display longer and a better finale because you couldn't tell when the finale was and all of a sudden the fireworks were over," Leif Hanson said.
The remainder of the money that was raised is being saved for next year's July 4th fireworks celebration.
The Sioux Falls Jaycees are volunteers who promote leadership and community service projects.
