Police arrest Sioux Falls man after chase ends in crash

Posted: Updated:

A Sioux Falls man is in custody after police say he led them on chase through the city early Friday morning.

Police say they attempted to stop of a vehicle driven by Hiruy Habtemariam, 31, around 2:00 a.m. Friday.  Officers say the Sioux Falls man failed to stop for a flashing red light at 26th Street and Phillips Avenue.  Habtemariam failed to pull over and a short chase began.  Officers stopped the chase due to the speed the suspect was traveling.

Police say Habtemariam continued at speed northbound on Main Avenue.  He was unable to make the turn at 18th Street and collided with a tree.  Then he and a passenger got out of the car and started running.  Police caught up with Habtemariam a few blocks away and arrested him.

Habtemariam had minor injuries from the crash.  He was arrested on charges of Driving While Intoxicated, Felony Eluding, Fleeing Police, Open Container and a Red Light Violation.

Police have not found the passenger and it's not known if he was hurt in the crash.  Police say the air bags in the car deployed and the car was totaled in the accident.
