Gun ban lifted on Sioux Falls City property

Posted: Updated:

Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether signed an executive order banning City employees from carrying a gun on City property.

Mayor Mike Huether and Police Chief Doug Barthel made the announcement Wednesday. Mayor Huether said the new executive order revises an ordinance prohibiting all people from carrying guns on City property. Huether and Barthel said the old executive order was unenforceable and unconstitutional.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Mayor Huether explained the new executive order is constitutional because city government can regulate city employees.

Mayor Huether said the revision of this executive order is one of more than 20 city ordinances up for revision.
