Plan to address long wait times

Posted: Updated:

People in Sioux Falls are fed up.

@Clarified tweeted -  Just made second trip of day to driver's licensing station. Got there at 7 am -- already 30 people there. At 2 PM there was 2-hr wait.

The mayor of Sioux Falls agrees that this major migraine must be addressed.

"We've got people in our town that are trying to get their license for the first time or they're trying to renew their license and they're waiting hours to have that done," said Mayor Mike Huether. "I know that's not acceptable to the Governor, it's not acceptable to me, and oh my gosh it's not acceptable to those good people that are waiting for hours."

That's why Huether sent Governor Dennis Daugaard a letter asking him take action. The Governor told KSFY that he and his staff have been discussing the long wait lines for a few days.

"The problem was really created by the summer rush that does occur at this time of year. Unfortunately, it occurred at the same time as a number of key staff turnover, unexpectedly," said Daugaard.

The Governor decided to act quickly, announcing a six-part driver licensing improvement plan. In includes: extended hours of operation, employee overtime, aggressive hiring and training, advanced scheduling to eliminate peak and slow periods, self-service kiosks, and temporary licenses. The Governor's hope is that this plan puts a stop to the two-hour wait times.

"The ideal would be no wait. The question is do the taxpayers want to pay for all the staff that would be required to ensure that there's no wait, or would they rather pay for a level of staffing that provides a modest amount of wait time but within reason?"
