People in Wagner shocked by toddler death

Posted: Updated:

People in Wagner are shocked to hear the gruesome details of what led up to the death of RieLee Lovell, 2.

Taylor and Laurie Cournoyer are in custody for felony child abuse or neglect and also failing to report the death of a child. The two were supposed to be watching the child when she was found dead -- wrapped in a towel in the closet.

The baby's grandmother, Pamela Ashes, tells KSFY News the reason the Cournoyers were watching RieLee was because her mother Eileen was having complications with her current pregnancy and just needed some time.

The parents say they tried calling the Cournoyers on the night of July 2, but couldn't get a response.  We now know why.

Court documents released Thursday show the Cournoyers were using methamphetamine, marijuana and prescription drugs when they last saw RieLee. Taylor Cournoyer even told police RieLee could've been dead for more than a day and a half.

Even though most people in the neighborhood didn't want to go on camera, they say they are disgusted by what happened in the house and to Rielee. One parent said he hopes there is a lesson here that shows the community how dangerous drugs really are.

An 11-year-old is being held as a suspect in what investigators are calling a homicide.  Because he is a juvenile there is a chance that details and questions about this case may go unanswered as juvenile court is not open to the public . The Cournoyers are expected to make their first court appearance July 17 in Lake Andes.
