Missing prisoner still on the loose, residents react
The search continues in and around McCook County as authorities look high and low for 31 year-old Oscar Antonio Herrera-Menjivar.
And many who live around the area, in smaller towns like Alexandria and Spencer, weren't thrilled to hear about it.
"It's unusual to hear in this area, to stop in such a small town with no enforcement in the small town," Peggy Huber said.
Another man says while it's concerning, he isn't surprised.
"They can plan these things for quite awhile as they're going down the route and all that," Mark Meidinger said.
The van was headed east on Interstate 90 when it stopped at the Fuel Mart. That's when, authorities, believe the prisoner jumped out, escaped and headed south.
"We've conducted a lot of searches, gone off a lot of information we gained from other people in the transport van. We've done a lot to follow-up and we'll continue to do a lot of follow-up," Lt. Paul Gerken said.
But so far, none of the information has led any of them to Herrara-Menjivar who has a criminal past of sexual violence in Lee County, Florida.
It still heightens concerns to some knowing a prisoner is on the loose.
"I worry for the children in the communities, if he preys on little kids, that's a concern," Peggy Huber said. "I hope they find him by the end of the day."
Authorities want to warn you: if you're traveling, or live in the area, be on the look out and don't pick up a hitch-hiker in the area. If you know where he is or think you may have spotted him, you can call your local law enforcement or 911.
