National zookeeper week is celebrated at the Great Plains Zoo

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of people spent a hot and steamy Sunday at the Great Plains Zoo in Sioux Falls.

The zoo was celebrating their very own, the zookeepers.

This week kicks off national zookeeper week.

They want people to thank zookeepers for all the hard work they do to take care of these animals.

Some zookeepers say it's an honor.

"It's nice to get recognized for not only what we do at the zoo but it kind of portrays as a zoo as a whole and the conservation effort we're making as an institution," Nolan Schlichter said.

At the Great Plains Zoo there are 14 zookeepers who care for more than 1,000 animals.

The last day of national zookeeper week will be Saturday.
