The Comet II roller coaster will be featured at the Sioux Empire Fair in 2012. It takes 3 weeks to set up!
The Sioux Empire Fair is fast approaching and crews are working around the clock to get the fairgrounds ready. As Nancy Naeve Brown reports not only is the fair expanding from 6 days to 9, it's also expanding it's seating inside the grandstand.
The 73rd Annual Sioux Empire Fair kicks off on Saturday August 4th and the fair manager says not only will be 3 days longer, he wants it to be bigger and better than it has in years. To ensure a bigger crowd can get into the grandstand, crews made some changes to the infield. They've removed the elevated seating on the grass berms on the sides of the stage replacing it with crushed concrete. They've also added asphalt for the pit area in front of the stage for concert goers who want to get as close as possible to the band.
"It makes for much better flow, the crowd isn't condensed. It makes much better layout for the venue and we've heard nothing but positive feedback, "Scott says.
Fair management is also pretty excited about something new and huge this year. It's the Comet II and it's the largest portable roller coaster in North America.
"They started setting up July 5th. 6 guys have been working 12 to 14 hour days. It takes 3 weeks to set up. It came in 10 semis and they've been assembling it, "Scott says.
And when it's done, it promises to be one wickedly wild furiously fast adrenaline filled ride.
"We wanted to bring in attractions and rides that took us up to the next level," Scott says.
A new midway carnival will also bring in about 15 more rides than in the past plus more kiddy rides. Not an adrenaline junkie but a history buff? You'll notice a lot of improvements on Pioneer Lane from new roofs, signage and ramps. If are overwhelmed just thinking about all the changes when you walk in the gates, not to worry, fair folks are changing that too.
"We opened up the end of the Bridlewood Barn, asphalted it and we'll have people in there volunteering, manning it as a welcome center. They'll give out info on the fair with maps, "Scott says.
9 days of super-sized family fun, map or not, you should run right into it.
