As the Switch Back Draw Fire burns through Custer State Park, youth at the State Treatment and Rehabilitation Academy near Custer are being relocated.
A total of 39 females in the East Campus of the Start Academy are voluntarily relocating as a precaution of the nearby Switch Back Draw Fire.
According to the South Dakota Department of Corrections, the fire was not immediately threatening the east campus, but the decision to move is partly due to potentially changing weather conditions.
The females are staying at the west campus until DOC staff members can determine when it is safe to return.
STAR Academy staff members are notifying the families of the youth that were moved.
