Blue Angels visit Sanford Children's Hospital in Sioux Falls

Posted: Updated:

You might have heard them in the air this week, but the Blue Angels are also grabbing attention with children on the ground.

Three of the Navy's Blue Angels put smiles on the faces of some of the kids at Sanford Children's Hospital Friday. The Blue Angels are in Sioux Falls for the Airshow this weekend.

Ty Sichneller, 5, has been very excited this week with the planes flying over Sioux Falls.   Ty laughed as his mother asked how excited he is for the Airshow.

Ty was cured of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2009, but he relapsed last July and has been undergoing aggressive chemotherapy ever since.

Annette Sichneller, Ty's mother, says the last year has been difficult because the family has been in the hospital a lot lately. Annette says the visit from the Blue Angels has meant a lot.

"I mean, they're here for the show but to come out to the community and take the time to spend time with our kids makes a huge impression," Annette said. "This is something he'll remember forever."

However, unlike Ty some of the children at the hospital won't be able to attend the Airshow. First Class Hospital Corpsman Jonathan Mosek said that is specifically why they stayed on the ground for a short period this morning

"Some of these kids are going to be here for a while, or they're getting ready to be here for a while. So it's good to help cheer up their day and bring a little joy to their life," Mosek said.

Mosek added, visiting the hospitals helps make his day. He says one of the highlights of being on the Blue Angels is seeing a child smile.

"It's about showing the community we're more than just jets and boats," Mosek said.

The gates open and shuttles begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The Airshow starts at 11 a.m. Click here to learn more.
