Authorities say Rosebud fires lead to evacuations

Posted: Updated:

ROSEBUD, S.D. (AP) - Authorities on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota say residents in about 40 homes have been asked to evacuate due to a series of wildfires.

Tribal spokesman John Spotted Tail says a lightning storm Thursday afternoon sparked several fires, 2 of which have expanded on the reservation's timber reserve.

Spotted Tail says firefighters were arriving on the scene from surrounding areas Friday afternoon. He did not know the scope of the fires or whether any structures have been damaged.

KOYA radio is reporting that the fires are out of control and heading north, aided by strong winds. The station is reporting that there are at least four fires, each more than 200 acres.
