Nebraska firefighters say Norden fire is hard to fight

Posted: Updated:

A grass fire in Nebraska has destroyed at least five buildings in the town of Norden. One is a home. Norden is a north central Nebraska, just miles from the South Dakota border. The grass fire spread to over 100,000 acres.

Nebraska's governor visited the Niobrara River Canyon Fire on Saturday and says he's working to get helicopters and planes to the area to fight the fire from above.

Officials say the problem is the fire is in a valley making it difficult and dangerous for firefighters to fight the fire.

"The problem is, with the canyon area is that it's so heavily wooded. So we can't get equipment and vehicles down in there, so it's a fight trying to get things stopped once they start."

The fire started Friday morning after lightning struck the area.

Stay tuned as we follow this developing story.
