Myrtle Fire in South Dakota about 40 percent contained

PRINGLE, S.D. (AP) - A fire in the Black Hills of nearly 16 square miles is about 40 percent contained.

Crews secured the southeastern portion of the Myrtle Fire on Sunday, as weather conditions allowed firefighters to conduct the burnout.

Rain over the northern two-thirds of the fire assisted in slowing fire spread.

Crews on Monday were working on mopping up the fire perimeter, a process in which firefighters make sure there are no hot spots near the containment lines. They'll also be clearing any hazard trees along the roads to make sure travel is safe.

In another blaze 10 miles northwest of Edgemont, firefighters built a fire line around the newest portion of the Mossagate Fire and are in mop-up and patrol status on its other flanks.
