YANKTON, S.D. (AP) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is again seeing problems with litter below Gavins Point Dam on both sides of the Missouri River.
The corps is reminding recreationalists who use the area to throw out or recycle their trash.
Corps natural resource manager Gary Ledbetter says shorelines have been lined with pop cans, water bottles, beer bottles, empty bags of chips and Styrofoam bait boxes. He says most of the litter is left behind by individuals fishing from the shore.
He says it's typically bad on Mondays, as the trash accumulates over the weekend.
Ledbetter says the biggest problem with the styrofoam and plastic bottles is that they're not biodegradable.
