School of Mines student pleads guilty to making threats

Posted: Updated:

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A South Dakota college student accused of threatening to shoot people on campus and burn down a dean's house says he never intended to harm anyone.

Nineteen-year-old Boyce Way also told a judge he is in counseling, as he appeared in court Monday and pleaded guilty to making a terroristic threat at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

Under terms of the plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend local jail time and probation, along with a psychological evaluation. The decision on punishment rests with the judge, who could impose up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Authorities say Way left a letter at the student union on April 17 containing the threats, and that he signed it BTK, the infamous signature of a Kansas serial killer.
