BOX ELDER, S.D. (AP) - Bomb disposal experts from Ellsworth Air Force Base were called in after an unexploded military shell was discovered in a Box Elder residence.
The German shell was found among other World War II memorabilia belonging to a deceased veteran. A family member alerted authorities Monday.
Ellsworth officials determined it could be a live shell and took it to the base for disposal. Box Elder Police Chief Chris Misselt says it posed only a small threat to people outside the house.
The Ellsworth technicians determined the shell was from a cannon commonly mounted on Nazi airplanes during the war.
