McGovern celebrates 90th birthday

Posted: Updated:

It is a milestone meant to be shared.

"To see this room jammed, as it was a moment ago, is a thrill to me. I confess to that," said former Senator George McGovern. "I love to see people, and I love to see that so many of them are still interested in being close to me. Because, I'm interested in being close to them."

Arguably South Dakota's most iconic politician, McGovern has plenty of reason to celebrate 90 years of service.

"He's a gift not just for Democrats, but all South Dakotans," said South Dakota Democratic Chair Ben Nesselhuf.

George's grandson Matt agrees, "People from both sides of the aisle still have a great deal of love and respect for him. So, I love to see it as a member of the family."

McGovern says in his 90 years he's most proud of his commitment to helping end the Vietnam War.

To this day, he loves politics and people. His passion for life is likely why he makes 90 look so good.

"He never really retired," said Matt McGovern. "He kept working. He kept writing. He kept speaking. He kept traveling. Doing all those things that keeps your mind sharp. It keeps you physically healthy."
