Dakota Corps scholarships awarded to 38 students

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota officials say 38 high school graduates have received scholarships from a program that encourages people to pursue careers in critically needed occupations.

The Dakota Corps scholarship program is financed by donations from businesses and non-profit organizations. Students get money to cover tuition and fees as they study to become veterinarians, nurses, other health care workers and teachers of music, foreign language, special education, math or science.

In return, the students agree to work in those occupations in South Dakota for a number of years.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard says students who receive the scholarships give back to the state by working in critically needed occupations.
