BRIDGEWATER, S.D. (AP) - The Bridgewater-Emery School District in southeast South Dakota mistakenly overpaid an employee by $20,000 for the 2010-11 school year.
The district's annual audit uncovered the error. Officials did not identify the employee, who received total pay that was 1½ times the worker's contract over a 12-month period.
District Superintendent Jason Bailey said the overpayment occurred while Bridgewater and Emery were merging their schools and was missed by accounting software.
The employee's pay is being reduced over a period of time so the school district can recoup the money.
