Posted: Updated:

The South Dakota Department of Transportation is holding a dedication ceremony to acknowledge Interstate 90 in South Dakota as the "Purple Heart Trail."

Two dedication ceremonies will be held on Tuesday August 7, which is actually National Purple Heart Appreciation Day. The ceremonies will be at Valley Springs Rest Area at 2 p.m. C.T. and Spearfish Rest Area at 1 p.m. M.T.

The South Dakota Transportation Commission recently approved a request from the Military Order of the Purple Heart to designate Interstate 90 as the "Purple Heart Trail."

Mark Williamson,  Commander of the Sioux Falls chapter and the Senior Vice Commander of the Department of Dakotas of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, said the new designation pays tribute to the men and women who received the Purple Heart Medal.

45 states and Guam have designated parts of the national road and interstate highway system as Purple Heart Trails.

Markers will be placed at rest areas located along Interstate 90 to signify the Purple Heart Trail. A sample of the marker is expected to be on display at the dedication ceremony.
