Community members have mixed emotions on new events center name

Posted: Updated:

We talked to some people in our community who have mixed emotions when it comes to the new events center name, the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.

Sanford is the largest, rural health care system in the nation with locations in 126 communities in seven states. Plus, they're going international. But they are more than just a hospital.

There's the Sanford Complex, where the University of Sioux Falls football team plays.

Also, the Pentagon at the Sanford Sports Complex which is coming in Fall 2013.

Now Sanford is slapping its name on the new events center.

"I just think we can be more clever and think of other things on there besides Sanford," Joe Price said.

"Sanford has their name on a lot of things in town so I guess it would be nice to see something a little different. But at the same time, that's were the funding is," Casey Weerheim said.

Besides dishing out $750,000 every year for the next 25 years, Sanford is also donating $2 million up front for digital displays.

"That kind of money would buy a lot of things," Joe Price said.

"I think it sounds like he'll own the town but he's got the money and spreading it around but that's wonderful, that's great for Sioux Falls to have that flow of cash coming in and it's nice to have someone back the events center," Jerry Meyer said.

While there are mixed emotions about the name, most say they'll still use it.

"It will bring more shows and events to Sioux Falls and surrounding areas," Casey Weerheim said.

"Of course I'll go if there is any event I want to go to," Jerry Meyer said.

We also talked to people who say it's still the wrong time to build the events center because of the economy.

Sioux Falls city councilors will vote on the naming rights.
