Fareway hoping to open grocery store in Sioux Falls

Posted: Updated:

Another local grocery store chain could soon be coming to Sioux Falls. Fareway Stores, Inc. is hoping to open on West 41st Street and Grange Avenue.

Marcene Hassebroek does some of her shopping in Sioux Falls but knows all about the grocery store Fareway.

"I shop at Fareway in Worthington. I love it," Hassebroek said.

She's not the only one who loves it.

"They have a great selection, great meat counter and I enjoy that a lot," Debbie Denhartog said.

Fareway wants to open where HOM Furniture used to be which sits next to Hobby Lobby and Office Max. The company applied for a building permit earlier this week. City officials tell us Fareway officials now need to get the space ready for a grocery store.

While we have our share of food stores in town, Lawrence and Schiller's Micah Aberson says competition could be a good thing.

"Consumers have a choice. It drives competitors to look at pricing models so consumers generally benefit. Prices decrease, service levels increase," Aberson said.

The marketing firm also mentions it means something when a business wants to come to town.

"Businesses see opportunity. They see growth here and they say that's a place I want to be and I want to do business and that's a testament to Sioux Falls and this region," Aberson said.

Some shoppers say they like competition especially if they can save a buck.

"They always have a good selection and prices are competitive and they run really good sales," Denhartog said.

"I think being dominated by one store is not a good thing," Hassebroek said.

Fareway executives think they could be open as soon as next spring. Fareway is an Iowa-based grocery store. They opened their 100th store last year. The company recently expanded to Illinois, Minnesota and Nebraska.
