PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota has joined other states in filing a friend-of-the-court brief in a federal appeal involving Maryland's requirements for getting a permit to carry a gun.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says the written brief supports a lower court's decision to strike down Maryland's requirement that law abiding citizens must demonstrate a reason for carrying a gun. He says a person who otherwise meets reasonable requirements for getting a gun permit should not have to provide further justification.
Jackley says requiring a law abiding citizen to provide a reason for carrying a firearm infringes on the constitutional right to bear arms.
