MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) - Former South Dakota lawmaker George Shanard of Mitchell has died.
Shanard died Friday morning. He was 86.
Shanard served in the state Senate from 1975 to 1992 and was the Republican majority leader from 1989 to 1992. He also worked in the grain industry.
Dusty Johnson of Mitchell, chief of staff for Gov. Dennis Daugaard, says Shanard was a good legislator who worked to solve problems.
Shanard's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Mitchell, with burial at the American Legion Cemetery.
