Posted: Updated:

The shooting started at a Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, outside Milwaukee. A morning worship service suddenly became a crime scene.

"The first officer on the scene is a 20 year law enforcement vet and accomplished tactical officer. when he arrived, engaged an active shooter. Multiple rounds and multiple gunshot wounds. Officer taken to Freighter Hospital for multiple gunshot wounds. The shooter also shot. Down on scene and presumed deceased" said Greenfield Police Chief Brad Wentlandt.

Police swat teams swarmed the scene, along with ambulances and paramedics.

"The tactical personnel who've gone through the scene have initially identified what they believe to be 4 deceased inside the temple and 3 deceased outside of the temple, 1 of whom is the shooter." said Wentlandt

"It stopped a tragic event that could have been a lot worse. There was a service going on with many people at that location. Family members could only stand in anxious groups waiting for word of their loved ones." said Oak Brook Police Chief John Edwards.

One thing is certain, this investigation is just beginning.

"There are multiple agencies involved here both local state, and federal. And we're all trying to coordinate the response here" said Greenfield Police Chief Brad Wentlandt.
