Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center is celebrating a recent award.
The Sioux Falls hospital was recently recognized with a Community Value Leadership Award by Cleverley + Associates, based in Columbus, Ohio, having earned the designation of Community Value Five-Star Provider.
The Five-Star recognition goes to hospitals that achieve a Community Value Index score in the top 20% of all hospitals in their group. Avera McKennan was one of only three hospitals recognized in South Dakota, and the only one in the Sioux Falls region. This is the fourth time Avera McKennan has received this award since 2008.
Each year, Cleverley + Associates publishes a ranking of the best hospitals in the nation in terms of the value that they provide to their community. The current rankings were recently published in The State of the Hospital Industry - 2012 Edition. In the ninth annual Community Value Index® (CVI) study, Cleverley + Associates has conducted a logical and meaningful evaluation of the U.S. hospital industry.
The Community Value Index was created to provide a measure of the value that a hospital provides to its community. The CVI is composed of 10 measures that assess a hospital's performance in four areas: Financial viability and plant reinvestment, hospital cost structure, hospital charge structure, and hospital quality performance.
"Fundamentally, the CVI suggests that a hospital provides value to the community when it is financially viable, is appropriately reinvesting back into the facility, maintains a low cost structure, has reasonable charges, and provides high quality care to patients," said James Cleverley, co-author of the study.
"One of Avera's three values is stewardship, along with compassion and hospitality. In our mission of health ministry, we feel it is imperative to make careful use of the resources entrusted to us, as well as our patients' resources, so our patients receive the highest quality care possible at the best value," said Dr. David Kapaska, regional president and CEO of Avera McKennan. "We're proud to have received the only Community Value recognition in the Sioux Falls area, which validates that we are indeed providing our residents with the best possible value in health care."
