A grass fire broke out in rural Clay County Monday afternoon, spreading quickly and damaging property about half a mile east of Hub City.
The call came in to Clay County Dispatch around 3:00 p.m. and as of 4:30, the fire was still burning.
Homeowner Mary Baer tells us she lost outbuildings on her property including an old grainery, a hog shed and a barn all dating to the early 1900's.
"I heard my fire alarm going off in my living room. When I looked out, flames were already 20 feet or so from the house," said Baer.
Baer's house was spared from the flames. Crews from Vermillion, Wakonda, and Beresford helped to fight the fire. No word yet on how much land was charred.
