6-year-old helps save aunt

Posted: Updated:

Smiling comes easy for Madelyn Eggebraaten. Hanging out with her aunt Melissa makes Madely even more toothy.

Recently, the two were having a sleep over.

"I woke up and she was shaking, and she was sweating really bad," said Madely.

Suddenly, she was in a very weighty situation.

"I was very, very scared."

Fortunately, her Dad taught her what to do in an emergency.

"I didn't know what was going on first, so then I went to go get help," said Madely.

Her aunt Melissa was having a diabetic seizure.

"(She) said aunt Melissa is sick, she needs help. So, they (neighbors) then turned and called 911, so I'm racing down Minnesota Avenue to get to her place," said Madely's Dad, Matt. "When we got there both the paramedics and firemen came up to me and said if it weren't for your daughter your sister may not be here."

"At six years old that's pretty impressive. Some adults wouldn't be able to handle themselves when confronted with that in a quick manner," said Jeff Helm of Sioux Falls Fire Rescue. "She kept her cool and did what she needed to do to help her aunt."

Madely's heroics are why she was honored Tuesday. The plaques are pretty rare. In fact, the last one awarded was last fall.

"We want to recognize things that are amazing," said Helm. "Things that are really good in the community. This is one of those things."

Nightly dinner table quizzes about emergency situations paid off. Madely did exactly what her Dad taught her.

"She did it in totally different surroundings," said Matt Eggebraaten. "We weren't even at home, so I'm very proud of her. She's a hero."
