Neighbors of Maybelle Schein talk about incident one year later

Posted: Updated:

People who live in one small south Sioux Falls neighborhood call it a little village, because it's peaceful. But last year, on July 3rd, neighbors say that peace was disrupted.

"Made me sick to my stomach and just thought it can't be, our quiet neighborhood it couldn't be possible, but it was," Peggy Freyberg said.

Police tell us, on that day, James McVay broke into a home with Maybelle Schein, 75, inside. Schein's garage door was partially open. Police say McVay slit her throat, took her car and headed east.

Neighbor Peggy Freyberg still can't wrap her head around why.

"Creepy. And to take someone's life is so terrible. To take her car and her life, she had a lot to live for and she gave other people a lot to live for. A very sweet lady," Freyberg said.

McVay was eventually caught by Madison Police in Wisconsin. Schein's car was equipped with On-Star which traced exactly where the car was.

Just a few days after his arrest, McVay talked with Wisconsin reporters.

Reporter: "Do you have any regret?"

McVay: "No, none at all. In fact, I'd do it again and again and again if given the opportunity. Anything to take care of my mission."

McVay details the chilling plot to go kill President Obama in Washington D.C. That disturbs several neighbors in Freyberg's community with memories that are still all too clear.

"Quite often, I see that yellow tape that police put out before but when that was gone, it helped a lot. We felt that now it was time to heal," Freyberg said.

She does it in a community she has always loved.

"Everyone felt the same way. What a loss our dear friend Maybelle. We have missed her so much but life must go on," Freyberg said. "May justice be done, that's about all I can say."

This is the third time McVay's court date has been delayed. It was scheduled for Monday afternoon, but was cancelled August 10.
