Events celebrating anniversary of Oahe Dam planned
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota State Historical Society is offering three programs this week to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the Oahe Dam.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers designed and built the dam starting in 1948. It was dedicated on Aug. 17, 1962.
On Friday, the Historical Society is presenting images of the Oahe Dam construction at 4 p.m. at the Cultural Heritage Center. This follows the main event scheduled at 11 a.m. At 9 a.m. Saturday, a reception for the workers who constructed the dam and their families will be held at the Cultural Heritage Center. Also on Saturday, film footage of the Missouri River closing operations, the power plant construction and other events will be shown at the State 123 Theatre in Pierre.
