"The Closet," helps get clothes to those in need

Posted: Updated:

The Ransom Church is holding a quarterly event called "The Closet." Through donations a large amount of clothing is now ready to be given to those in need.

The founder of the project Tina Schmutterer, started the project when she worked at Whittier Elementary. She did it as a way to help the students in her school. When the Ransom Church opened in its current location, the project was expanded.

Each person who comes through the door is given a shopping bag. They are welcome to fill that bag with as many clothes that fit. They can also take a larger item, like a winter coat. Organizers do not ask for donations or anything in return. The group says they just want people who need clothes to get them. The large scale shopping event happens quarterly. Right now the group is focusing on back-to-school clothing.

The Closet program is free to those in need. It's being held Saturday, August 18th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Ransom Church is located at 700 N. Main in Sioux Falls. All sizes of clothing are available from newborn to adult plus sizes. For questions, call 339-3733 or email office@theransomchurch.org.

As for donations, the group says they are always looking for good, gently used clothing. Organizers ask that clothes are sorted by size and that an appointment is made to bring them to the church. Organizers say they don't need any more donations until after this current Closet event.
