WHITEWOOD, S.D. (AP) - Whitewood's Oak Park is getting some 1,000 feet of new mountain bike trails to connect two existing trails at Oak Park.
International Mountain Biking Association Trail Care crews visited Whitewood over the weekend to begin the project. On Saturday, seventeen people used axes and rake-like tools to smooth a flag-marked path, periodically conferring with a foreman who offered tips and advice.
Rocky Mountain Region Director Ryan Schutz has performed the work in 44 states and five Canadian provinces. He says it's the most terrain he's seen in 40 acres, and Oak Park's steep terrain and sandy soil present special challenges.
