The report issued Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Colorado had the lowest figure, at just below 21 percent, while Mississippi had the highest at nearly 36 percent.
According to the CDC, South Dakota's obesity rate is 28.1 percent, Iowa's is 29 percent and Minnesota's is 25.7 percent. Chronic Disease Epidemiologist Mathew Christensen, South Dakota Department of Health, said these new numbers are good for South Dakota. Christensen said the obesity rate was above 30 percent in 2009 and it was on the rise.
Christensen said in the last 10-15 years South Dakota's obesity rate was increasing at one of the fastest rates in the country. He said at that pace half of South Dakota's population would be obese by now.
Catherine Lillehoj of the Iowa Department of Public Health says the 2011 statistics aren't directly comparable to previous numbers because of changes in collection methods—which include adding cell phones to the survey list and a different weighting system.
Christensen said while some states did experience different results through the new methods, South Dakota's and the nation's obesity rates were unaffected.
